Introduction and Suggestions
We need to start naming children’s feelings for them, from an early age. However, as their brains mature, we can start to directly teach them about different emotions and help them to explore their own triggers, preferences and responses.
The Spotting My Feelings Card Set can come in at that basic level – we can introduce a range of activities that can help children to actively think about what word belongs to specific feeling states. These cards can then be used in lots of different activities to build upon this basic level understanding. Some ideas are explored within the PDF but obviously you can work as creatively as you like! Also included in this pack are some ‘blank’ faces so children can colour in and name any additional emotions that they experience that are not named in this pack.
The Spotting My Feelings Card Set also includes an ‘I feel’ symbol. This can be useful as a sentence starter, especially if you are using the larger cards in group activities and discussions. However, it could also be put onto a communication card: A card that a child could attach an emotion symbol to communicate what they are going through during more trickier times when they do not feel able to describe this in words. I.E Children may sometimes feel more comfortable attaching a ‘sad’ symbol next to an ‘I feel’ card rather than talk about their hard feeling in the here and now.
