These cards were designed to help children to develop stories through play; they can be used as play symbols in the absence of toys or provide role play prompts, for example. However, Story Cards are equally helpful to support language development, creative writing, journalling, group games, social skills (i.e. turn taking) ice-breaker activities, sequencing, bedtime stories or as visual prompts to explain new concepts and activities. They could also be used to play memory and reaction games such as snap and matching pairs, given you have a PDF and can print multiple copies of the cards out. All Card Sets are the same size dimensions so multiple packs can be used together!

Lynne often uses Story Cards during family assessments and support work in addition to focused work with children. Creating stories together can enhance group communication, problem solving and team work as well as helping the family to experience some lighter times together, to achieve a positive, fun outcome. The same can also be true when working with groups of children. Lynne has had some amazing outcomes creating huge story chains with families, that can often cross over into more than one room!

Each Story Card Set contains two sets of visuals, in two different sizes. The first set of visuals has a picture, with a label underneath, i.e. a picture of an ambulance with the word ‘ambulance’ underneath. The second set of visuals do not have the label underneath and the picture is slightly enlarged. Having this variation means the cards can cater for children with different imaginative capabilities; some children who think more rigidly might need more help understanding pictures so the label supports them with this.

Having two different sizes within the packs creates flexibility; role play cards and group activity cards can be larger versus sand tray symbols and worksheet visuals needing to be smaller. This variation in size and content means that the card set is as inclusive as possible for a wide range of children and families. Each PDF comes with suggestions about how to use these cards, under the headings story chains, small world play, games, creativity and speech and language.
