Regulation Preparation Therapeutic Card Set

After basic emotional literacy work has been completed (identifying emotions), the next stage would be to help children create coping strategies to manage their more challenging feelings. 

Often, general coping strategy plans are identified for each feeling, i.e. “When I am angry, I can jump around and have sensory time” or “When I am worried, I can read a book.”  The most effective coping strategy plans are more sophisticated than that.  They recognise that there can be multiple levels to the intensity of each emotion and that coping strategies that might work for level 2 anger may be completely ineffective at level 4. 

The Regulation Preparation Card Set is a tool to help children to develop these more complex coping strategy plans.  The Card Set depicts a range of known helpful practical and mindful coping strategies plus it also has a couple of ‘my idea’ cards so children can label additional things they already know work for them.  There are also five Feeling Level Cards, to assist in the visual selection and mapping out of coping strategies for each level of their challenging emotions.  Once each level is mapped out, this provides the complete coping strategy plan.. The PDF contains some suggestions for the Card Set’s use, through Creative Play and Discussions. If a child is unable to work with a 1-5 system, it is completely okay to modify the approach to a range that is within their capabilities.
